Planned Parenthood Saved Me

Planned Parenthood is dedicated to women's health. We're posting stories from women whose lives were saved or changed because they had access to affordable healthcare like cancer screenings through Planned Parenthood.

A quick note, too-- we'd really love pictures of you holding up your stories, or just pictures of you that you'd like to include.

(Not affiliated with PP, by the way. We're just big fans. Questions? Get in touch with @deanna on Twitter.)

Planned Parenthood helped me to save my father’s life

My father was in need of a heart and kidney transplant, and the plan was for me to be his kidney donor as that would allow him to receive a new heart more quickly than if he was waiting for anonymous donors for both.  I was determined to be a match and was medically cleared but the transplant team felt that since it’d had been over a year since my last pap I needed a new one, something I thought I had plenty of time for it. But a heart became available just two weeks later, and I needed that well woman exam immediately.  My own doctor couldn’t squeeze me in, but Planned Parenthood did and rushed the pap results so I could be cleared to donate my kidney within days of my father’s heart transplant. I had never been to a PP clinic, but the nurse practitioner was so kind and supportive and very informative and I will never forget how they made it possible for me to support my father; he’s doing wonderfully today and PP played a role in that outcome.
